I've seen a 1761 Queens Royal Highlanders Regimental flag up close.  It was trooped by British troops in Ireland.  In the center there is Saint Andrew and a cypher for the King.  Around the cypher are Tutor Roses for England and Thistles for Scotland.  It was hand cruel embroidered by the ladies in waiting for the Queen.  I believe in 1805 the British added Sham Rocks for Ireland to Regimental Flags.  Whales never got any symbology worked into the Regimental flags because it was conquered by the English back in the Middle Ages.
